Catalog Description:  An introductory course for the science, mathematics, engineering, or technology student emphasizing degree planning and academic success skills.  With departmental approval, may be substituted for AG E 111, AS 100, or ENGR 101.

Course Materials:  Provided by instructor

Course Objectives:  Section 3 specifically targets students majoring in one of the engineering fields.  SMET 101 has been designed to help you:

§         Develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.

§         Understand and apply collaborative learning/teamwork skills.

§         Understand majors and career opportunities in SMET disciplines.

§         Assess personal strengths, abilities, desires, and professional goals.

§         Develop an Academic Achievement Plan.

§         Identify campus resources available at NMSU.

Attendance/Participation Policy:  Class attendance and participation are required and represent a portion of your grade.  Excessive absences will result in your being dropped from the class.  You are allowed three absences, excused or unexcused, before it begins to affect your grade.

As part of the course requirements, you must participate in a minimum of two learning skills workshops offered by the NMSU Center for Learning Assistance and Retention.  You may select workshops based on your individual needs.  A schedule will be provided.

Course Overview:  This course has been designed to help you develop meaningful and effective methods for planning and achieving academic success.  You will be introduced to a variety of tools for accomplishing this long-term goal.  A major portion of the course is devoted to critical and creative thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and learning and implementing techniques for successful learning.  These skills and strategies will serve you well in this course and in others as you pursue your education.  Active participation in collaborative exercises and assignments is also required.  In fact, you will find that a good part of your work can be done with a partner or group.

Your participation in the course will be evaluated in a cumulative portfolio project (the Academic Achievement Plan) at the end of the semester. Assignments within the portfolio are designed to build on one another. We will collect and review your work several times throughout the semester. You will receive feedback and direction at each review.  You will also schedule a mid-term review with us and will participate in several peer reviews with others in the class.

Course Format:  The course is designed as a discussion based seminar. The course is highly interactive, and you will be working in collaborative peer groups during much of the semester.

Course Grading:  Points are distributed between assignment packets and other class components as follows. Use this chart to keep track of your progress over the course of the semester. To figure your percentage, use the following equation:
