Incoming Freshman Schedule Planning

Department of Civil Engineering

New Mexico State University

Incoming freshmen are required to take the Math Placement Exam (MPE) to identify where they belong in math.  Your math placement is critical to the rest of your schedule, as many classes in the engineering curriculum have math prerequisites or co-requisites. Your math placement exam score will consist of four numbers that are for basic algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, and trigonometry, respectively.  Find your math placement from your four scores in the table below:

Level

MPE Score

Math course to take

1

No MPE, or all four scores <5

CCDM 114

2

1st score ≥ 5

MATH 120

3

Sum of 1st and 2nd scores ≥ 10

MATH 121

4

1st ≥ 8 and 2nd ≥ 6

MATH 190

5

All scores ≥ 6

MATH 191

Based on your math placement, we suggest the following first semester schedule options.  Be sure to discuss your choices with an advisor.  If you have questions, you can contact Dr. White (505-646-3802; krwhite@nmsu.edu) or Dr. King (505-646-5377; jpking@nmsu.edu).
