The objective of the ASCE Student Chapter is to encourage its members to study civil engineering and to eventually advance in the civil engineering profession. Students must master the principles and techniques to earn their degrees. In addition, there are important non-technical subjects, generally called "professional matters," which are not usually covered in class work. Many aspects of these professional matters lend themselves to the Student Chapter programs. Chapter programs may allow presentation of topic too specialized or too broad for presentation in a structured coarse. In this way, the Chapter acts as a supplement to classroom education.
Student Chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers also help student begin those professional contacts and associations that continued through life are valuable to the practicing engineer in serving people and the engineering profession more effectively.
The Chapter is a good medium for exercising principles of personal and public relations. For example, members prepare, present and discuss papers, conduct Chapter or Club activities, hold offices, request and entertain guest speakers and visit engineering works under construction. They become involved with community service projects requiring the collective efforts of many, and read the publications of the society. These and many other Chapter or Club activities contribute to the broad personal development by stimulating and early professional consciousness while the student is still preoccupied with techniques. Students are given the opportunity to practice engineering actively in their civil engineering education.
