Course Description: Design of processes and facilities used in the transport, storage, treatment, and disposal of solid
and hazardous wastes.
Prerequisite:CE 356, or consent of instructor. (3 cr.)
Text: Need new textbook!
Reference: Approximately 300 pages in handouts from current sources will be provided to the class to supplement the text-book.
Prerequisite Topics: All students are assumed to have had college chemistry.
Topics:
Characteristics and sources of solid and hazardous wastes.
Hazardous waste management regulations that set design criteria.
Risk assessment and design standards and waste stream monitoring.
Criteria for site selection for hazardous waste treatment and disposal.
Design criteria for landfills for solid and hazardous wastes.
Design criteria for physical, chemical and biological treatment and disposal.
Design criteria for thermal and solidification/fixation processes.
Computer Usage: The application of computers in the design of a waste treatment and disposal system is highly encouraged, but not a requirement in the course.
Design Content:
The four exams and the team-design project are all design oriented. The focus of the class lectures is on design criteria, those established by regulatory agencies and those derived from a risk assessment process, and on the design criteria for the treatment and disposal technologies that can be employed. The problems on the exams are to test the students understanding and ability to apply these design criteria. Finally, in the design project, students are required to establish the applicable design criteria and to then use the identified criteria in the design of a multi-unit hazardous waste management system.
