Fillmore Canyon in the Organ Mountains, east of Las Cruces


Fillmore Canyon Students took a hike to Fillmore Canyon in the Organ Mountains to look at the abandoned mine site & discussed mine closure, remediation and reclamation of mined lands.
Mr. Vernon Maldonado (OSM) lectured on the fundamentals of hydrology as it relates to surface mining and reclamation.  The class discussed the effects of surface mining such as water quality from acid mine drainage and sedimentation from soil erosion.
