A tour of Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge

Students were shown a video of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge history and the management of the refuge.  Millet, corn, grain and alfalfa are grown to feed the birds that migrate from northern parts of the country to the Bosque where they spend milder winter months.

Dr. Bawazir showed students ongoing research of Riparian Evapotranspiration at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge (a project sponsored by Bureau of Reclamation).

Mr. Tasjian gave a tour of the refuge (above) and showed the students the land that was reclaimed from Saltcedar (Tamarix Ramossima), an exotic plant that has claimed many acres of riparian regions in New Mexico and other western states.  Students discussed with Tasjian the challenges and success of riparian region restoration, river management and the importance of timely flooding the region during early spring to allow seed germination and replenish nutrients in the floodplain.
